Two questions:

1) Should I be poppin' the caps off my 6 volt battery when I'm recharging? Build up of hydrogen gas sort of thing. How about if I'm using a low current recharger, like a Battery Tender?

2) I stuck a CD player in the Blue Funk's glovebox and ran a line to the speakers in its radio grill to listen to ambiance-appropriate tunes. The CD player uses 4.5 volts. Two AA batteries. I hook it up to an AC/DC adapter when I want to listen to tunes emulating from the Blue Funk while it's sittin' in the garage.

My question is: Is there such a thing as an adapter that would convert the 6 volts from the battery to 4.5 volts needed by the CD player?

Thanks. And may Red Skelton be with you.

Uhhhh- - - - -do the math again. Two AA batteries provide 3 volts, not 4.5. (1.5 v. each) You could use a potentiometer to drop the voltage to the CD player, just use one that will flow enough current to supply it. Drop me an IM with your email address, and I can send you a schematic on how to wire the potentiometer. (Never mind- - - -your email is already in my address book!) I'll see if I can draw up a quick circuit diagram and give you some Radio Shack part nunbers.

The battery cell caps are vented, so unless you're doing a high-rate charge like a quick boost, it's not necessary to remove the caps.

Thanks for the reply, Jerry.

You know, I didn't put "two and two together" to add up the AA voltage. I just went by the voltage stamped on the adapter. Oh well, leave it to a student to make something easy hard.

Thanks also for the info on battery recharging and for the diagram.

Of course, if I have any more questions, I'll be back. You know I will.

Adapter? Which is it, battery powered or AC powered?

If your adapter says 4.5V output, then you need that (and the current it also says on the adapter). The internals are probably transforming the 3V to 4.5V when it's on battery power.

(or transforming both the batteries and the adapter to something else - probably this)
