I have completed 1953 31oo chevy. Have 56 235 in. Starter sometimes clashes with flywheel. I remember these noises back when. My age is now given. The flywheel is damaged. The somewhat blunt end of what I call Bendix teeth is hitting fly/wh. and not carring thru,(engageing_. with stamp starter I should be able to force thru to flywheel before amps are applied via switch on starter with tapered teeth on starter. Do I need to randr starter and file, grind teeth to beter taper on starter. or flip fly/wh the only way

Hy sepp22, could you possibly have inadvertantly mixed a 12 volt flywheel with a 6 volt starter, or visa versa?

You prbably need a new drive on the starter. Every time you here the noise you lose a little more of the ring gear.

I would flip the ring gear and install a new starter bendix.Make sure you are using the right starter for the flywheel.

Are you using a 6V or a 12V starter? There's a difference in the number of teeth on the flywheel, and the starter drive pinion, so the starter and the flywheel must match. It's OK to run 12 volts against the 6V starter, as long as you don't crank for an extended period of time, but the starter and the flywheel MUST match. The 56 flywheel will be set up for 12 volts, so you'd need to be sure to use a 12V starter, or use a 6V starter and swap to the flywheel for a 54 or earlier engine.
