I have done some wet sanding and I think I have my desired result.

I want the truck to look like a work truck that was well taken care of.

I sanded this with 1000 grit and hand compund then hand polish.

I might try 1500 to see what that looks like but as you can see my paint skills leave much to be desired. a lot of orange peel coming off this paint job.

Let me know what you think. I didn't want to get a real shiny look. I think it looks more authentic this way.... Am i crazy?

My father in law thought the effect was pretty cool. I don't know if the pics do it justice.

I dig the maintained work truck look. Nice work.

It looks alright in the pictures. A few flaws and orange peel fits a working truck theme perfectly.

That is Marine Blue from TCP Global. It is very close to the original color. It looks a little lighter in these pics than in real life.

I am sanding off all the orange peel and leaving the 1000 grit scratches in. I have done significant body work on this truck trying to straighten the panels but not take out every single ding.

It just feels a little funny to spend this amount of time and money to not have a perfect glossy paint job but on the other hand I think this effect fits this old Maine farm truck.

If worse comes to worse I can always further sand and buff or (kill me now) repaint.

Looks good, lots of work behind this and I'm glad you wound up with something you're happy with.

Question: How did you paint the roof? When I primered mine there was no way I could hold the gun square to the center of the roof despite standing 3 feet off the ground on a ladder.

Adding this thread to my Watched Topics. Why this site makes you do it manually is WAY beyond me :mad:

I stood on the frame in the back and used a step ladder for the sides. My new gun is gravity feed which helps. It was very difficult to do this with the suction gun I used to prime it. The can was in the way and that gun has a very limited angle of tilt befroe the gun stops working.

It was still difficult especially subsequent coats since now there was fresh paint to avoid as well. I should have had my son do it he is 6'4" and has arms about 6" longer than mine.

I have a hard time painting the bed (not just the crappy job I did but) I found it near impossible to paint the inside of the bed. When I primed it the bed floor was not installed, much easier. Trying to put a second coat on was ridiculous hard since I could no longer stand in the bed. (any suggestions are welcome but i don't want to take the bed apart)

When I first got this truck and began peeling off the bad repairs the PO made I found a small piece of floor board that had the original color on it. It was about the only remnant of that color.

I nailed that artifact to the garage wall...5 years ago... This is exactly what I pictured the truck would look like when I finished!!

I really like the overall look of the truck. If you were going for utilitarian, you nailed it. The white grille and moons really carries the theme well. Lot of work paid off in a round-about way.

Yes that is exactly what I wanted.

I have learned a lot about paint finish in the last few weeks. I also learned yesterday(when i accidentally scatched the door) that if I buff this finish with my buffer I can get it to a glossy almost mirror finish. If I should ever tire of this look I can procced to the next without too much toil.

I did have to reintroduce 1000 grit scratches to the door after the fact.

I have been sanding for many hours. As I progress I think I am losing steam or getting impatient. My first sections...the front fenders...came out good. As I move forward I seem to be getting less luster.

I will be putting the bed back on this week and then I will spend some time refining the shine. Maybe i will even get some 1500 grit and see what that gets me. In the mean time I would like to start driving it again now that the good weather is here.

My poor painting skills have really sucked up a lot of time resanding all my orange peel primer, sealer and urethane.

You got that right. My son and one of his buddies just dropped by and stayed a really long time just looking at the truck from every angle.

These two guys looked at me like I was crazy 5 years ago when I brought this home. That felt really good!

I had that happen to me recently. I just met the guy and he insults me like that. WTF, man.

BTW, you deserve a lot of credit working in such a small area.

That's funny. I have had similar experiences after building my house in Maine.

I would like to do another truck someday but not until after I build my big garage at my Maine house. Your right it was difficult doing this in my tiny garage.
