I am about to do a rebuild on a 1955 261 and have been reading up. The information I find is mostly pertaining to '58-'62 261 engines which leads me to ask a few questions.

Is this '55 261 a full flow oil system? It does not have the 3/4" holes for the oil lines.

Is it possible to use my original '48 216 oil filter if not a full flow system?

Can I run a hydraulic cam/lifters in this '55 261 engine?

Thanks for you input.

Hy red450IH, if your block doesn't have the large holes for the oil lines to and from the filter then I would say it isn't setup for full oil filtration. Yes you could use your 216 bypass filtration system under those cicumstances. If your engine came from a truck, and as far as I know that was the only application for them in the United States, [we Canadians had them in Canadian Pontiac cars] then it probably had solid lifters, and the block would not be drilled for the oil to the lifter bores. You can check the lifter bores when you get the engine apart, if there is a hole through the block connecting all the lifter bores then you should be able to use hydraulic lifters, if there is no hole then I'm afraid it's solid lifters for you, hope that helps.

3B, Thanks for the information. The block is at the machine shop, but I'll look to see if the lifter bores are drilled when it gets back.
