I started off today planning on fixing an exhaust leak between the carb and the head. I removed the manifolds and noticed that there was a ton of carbon build up, and a couple of small oil leaks (discussed in another post). Upon checking the exhaust manifold, which had been welded up before due to cracking, I noticed that the weld had failed. I also had some big time leaks all around the repair spot. The manifold was also leaking where the intake and exhaust bolt together. I took them apart and started scratching my head about what to do. I remembered that I have a spare exhaust manifold in Arizona, and called to have it shipped out here. Now I'm playing the wait game.
I checked the carb to find out what was going on with the crazy amounts of carbon build up and found out that the float level was waaaay off. Instead of a 1 3/4" drop, it was just a hair short of 2", maybe 1 31/32". The float level, instead of being at 1 9/32" was at 1 15/32". I noticed that the interior of the intake manifold had a significant amount of
pooling, and I'm guessing that the carb has been dumping gas into the motor like a flushing toilet. I've now added an oil change to the list. I'm assuming that this could be contributing to poor vacuum, poor performance and a huge flat spot off idle. I'm pretty sure that it's the source of the
carbon, ha!
I also picked up a new set of points, condenser, cap, rotor plugs and wires, so I think when I get it back together it's going to be running a lot better. :crosses fingers:
