My brand new high torq starter sounds like crap. My mechanic tryed to shim it and couldn't get it to stop gringing wuile starting. Does it inconsistantly. It will grind then it engauges then starts.

Whats up? Should I try an new starter?

Going to a swap on Sunday could pick one up then.

Pull the starter off, look through the mounting hole, and turn the engine to inspect the flywheel ring gear. it sounds like you've got a damaged spot on the ring gear that's stopping at the starter location occasionally. Either replace just the ring gear on a standard shift flywheel, or change the whole flex plate if you're running an automatic trans in that case. It's also possible the solenoid linkage could be damaged or out of adjustment, allowing the starter to begin turning before the pinion gear is fully engaged into the flywheel on occasion.

sounds like the stomp starter needs to be adjusted. it's pushing the starter switch before it's engaged in the flywheel.

It sounds like you have a bad spot on the ring gear like hotrod describes. Inspect the ring gear like he describes I am assuming you are talking about the 48 model in your profile. If it is the ring gear, the only way to fix it is to pull the transmission, clutch and flywheel. If the back side of the ring gear looks good, you can heat it to where you can remove it and flip it around and shrink it back on. If its already been flipped, you will need another ring gear.
