I checked this thread, too
https://www.stovebolt.com/ubbthread...lat&Number=650718&gonew=1#UNREAD

I rebuilt the carb, with new kit parts. It still leaks around the middle gasket. I lowered the floats two times. And I put the old gasket back in there, too, so two gaskets now. All this on a 1956 235 with a single barrel carb.

The truck starts fine cold and idles nicely at 900-1000 rpm. Won't go much lower cold.

If I drive or rev the engine after a few minutes, and hold it revved for awhile as if driving down to the corner, then let off the gas, it dies and heartily refuses to re-start.

I tried jumper cables after the battery wore down, and that just didn't help either.

We finally rolled it down a hill and bump started it and went back home.

Then this evening, I tried it again , but just in the driveway.

It started right up cold. then idled nicely for a few minutes. then I revved it for a few longer seconds,. Not too fast, just like if I was driving.

then when I let off the gas, it died, and refused to start again.

but his time I was home in the driveway.

I know the carb has issues, still leaks.
Should I replace it with something different? Or take it apart again? Floats still too high?

What else should I look at?

these symptoms are recent. so I suspect the carb first, but can't tell for sure.

Set the float to spec.but check the needle and seat by ,when you got it apart , hold the top upside down with float installed and try and blow air into the inlet to see if the float needle is seating right if thats good it could be to much fuel pressure ,not common ,but it does happen. Cheating on the float will make you're carb not work right there are passages in the float bowl that need to have gas in them for the carb to operate .Also you need to make sure that you're getting fuel ,check for a cloged fuel filter. It's important to set the float to spec both ways up and at the bottom.
Is the carb a mod. B ?

What kind of choke mechanism do you have?

Have you checked for vacuum leaks?

Since your carburetor has a leak that does not seem to be easily stoppable, it sounds like you need a new/rebuilt carburetor. Hope that this will solve the problem, but be prepared to proceed onto the next problem.

I wouldn't rule out an ignition problem on this one. The next time it quits, pull a plug and hold it against the block while someone cranks the engine, and check for a spark.

Keep us posted.

You know, I've been considering ignition, too, but the carb is so obviously messed up, I thought to start there.

I will check for good spark if it won't start again.

I'm not sure what carb it is. Just a little one, single barrel, manual choke, very simple.

Maybe I should just get another one all rebuilt, but what should I get?

I saw some for sale on classic parts awhile ago.
