The groove in the edge allows the boards to move a little without going too far either direction. Also recesses the wear strip so it does not interfere with loading/unloading bed. Grooving is pretty easy. Inside cut is slightly deeper than rest - make it first, then work your way out to edge by moving saw fence a little each time.
Practice on a scrap piece first.
