with gas as much as it is and after reading the post lately on the 305 and the link on the HAMB i decided to bump some engine bolt ons up on my to do list. the post at the hamb proclaims a 5 MPG boost just from a holley 600 carb and edel performer intake. not bad. mind you these were both on my list for further down the road... anyways i decided to look on the ole ebay and see what I could see... and i found this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=290022272309&ih=019&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT

not a bad deal considering that the carb is hard to find for under $150 plus shipping in good used condition.

so im a happy camper and cant wait to see how this combo will not only release a little of the potential hidden in my 305 but also save me a little at the pump... driving 35+ miles a day it just makes sense to do this sooner than later... and the price is nice!

I wouldn't expect to gain 5 mpg. You would have to have that carb tuned perfectly, and then resist the temptation to bury your foot on the accelerater. Even if you don't see the economy, it is still worth it for the performance gain.

if the guys lying he fooled me. but yes I agree, even if the mileage difference is not that great the performance increase should put a smile on my face

The terms "Holley" and "MPG boost" in the same sentence???????? Boost over what? a 15 year old pouring gas into the intake out of a boot with a hole in the sole??? :p :p :p

Don't know what you had previously on your 305, but if you get the Holley within 75 percent of the fuel economy to be had with a q-jet you need to open a tuning shop. Your services would be in great demand!

As to the smile, unless you have a bunch of mods to the 305 a properly tuned Q-Jet will provide a much larger smile! smile -> grin

But to each its own. I hope you are happy with your purchase.

Jon.

thanks for your encouragement
i didnt have a quadrajet and if i did I wouldnt know the first thing on tuning it. the carb on my truck was a carter AFB that needed rebuilding and was manual choke. I chose to go with a holley elec choke 600 because from what I have read this is a pretty fool proof carb, contrary to what I have heard of the q-jet.

Troy - my original post was a light-hearted attempt at humor with a lot of truth.

The Q-Jet is a very misunderstood carburetor, but is a wonderful unit for the street because of the small primaries (increased low RPM air velocity) and huge secondaries (for power).

There is now a really "user friendly" book on the market about tuning Q-Jets. The author is Cliff Ruggles, and the book may be acquired through your local bookstore, or Mr. Ruggles has them available as well.

For years, Holley has been a favorite with the hot-rod crowd because of the ready supply of tuning parts. But no one has ever accused a Holley of being fuel efficient.

The spread-bore design, whether it be Rochester, or the Carter TQ is simply better when it comes to driveability and fuel economy on the street. The big disadvantage to many hobbyists for years with the Q-Jet was lack of knowledge, and lack of parts. Mr. Ruggles has eliminated BOTH objections.

Anyway, good luck with your Holley; but as a suggestion, for best results pay a Holley guru to tune it for you.

Personally, I think it is too large. As a point of reference, Mr. Duntov selected a Holley 600 for the 365 HP/327 used in the 1965ish Corvette. And a 575 CFM Carter for the 350 HP/327 Corvette. How wild is your 305?

We would have suggested a 400 CFM Carter (square-bore) or the variable demand spread-bore for this application.

Jon.

I,m with Carbking. If that guy got a big gain in MPG putting on a Holley his previous carb must have been in bad shape. He probably did some other tuning at the same time. A bad vacuum advance can cut 2-5 MPG. It,s aq good idea to go over everything else before blameing the carb.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.
