A '53 3-speed should not need to be double-clutched. You should have synchros for every shift except into 1st or reverse. I'd start by checking the lubricant in the transmission. First does it have any, and assuming it does, is it clean?
If the lube is okay I'll have to let someone else take the lead on your questions because I know little about transmissions.

If you have trouble shifting & finding gears it is in the linkage &/or the shift box on top of the column. That little box often gets worn inside . They are easy to rebuild. You can weld up the worn places & file or grind them back. You can sand down the surface of the cover to take up for wear in the shaft holes.
To double clutch if you are down shifting you put the clutch in & shift to neutral, let the clutch out & accelerate the engine to the rpm it will be at when you complete the shift & put the clutch in & complete the shift. To up shift you put the clutch in, shift to neutral let the clutch out & hesitate till the engine slows to the speed it will be after the shift. Then put in the clutch & complete the shift. You can downshift to first before you stop using that method.
OK now if I charge by you in my 58 pickup at 80 mph you will not give me a ticket. George
