I took in my 228 / 6 to a shop for a value job . They originally quoted $250, no problem. After inspection theY SAY new values and guides all around are needed no big suprise < cost of this items are around 250 DOLLARS , forget pennies and rounding . The real question is that the jumped the price to $810. I think I am being ripped, comments please. I went in for a value job not a rip of , Am I wrong, its not a engine rebuild.

I rebuilt one of my 228's a year ago. The head was completely rebuilt with new valves, guides, springs, and hardened seats and surfaced. It wasn't cheap, no where near $810. I paid $12 a piece for valves($144), $5 per spring($60), and I can't remember on the guides or seats, but the total with labor and machining was $420, with a hot tank, magnaflux, and pressure test. I think that you are definitely getting ripped off at $810. Now you say the parts quote was $250, that sounds OK, and 250 for the valve job with hot tank, mangaflux and pressure test, might be a bit more, but I don't see how they get $810.

Yep, bout twice as much as a complete head rework should cost. I had two of them done at two different shops a couple ofyears ago and both ran around $450. Hot tanked, magnafluxed, pressure tested, new valves, guides, hard seats, springs checked and shimmed, resurfaced.
I'd tell them to stuff it and find another shop.
