Trying to keep as much originality as possible on my 46 Burb.

Which gasket set do I use 216 or 235?

If I use the 235 manifold assembly I have to deal with the rearward angle of the exhaust outlet that dumps right over the steering gear box.

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

Your 216 manifold setup will not work on a 235

Won't it work with a set of stepped-down adapter rings to center the intake in the larger 235 ports?

I have been using 216 manifolds on 235 conversions for years. I use the 216 gaskets and adapter rings to step down the head port to 216 diameter.

Jerry,

Do you know a source of those stepped-down adapter alignment-rings? I cannot find them at JC's, Classic Parts, Chevs of the 40s, and American Classic (I might be looking at the wrong places).

Here's a source and I know there are a few more:

Port size adapters, set of 3, Chevrolet 235 to 216, or turned around, 216 to 235. Used with mis- matched intake manifolds and heads. Also works with Pontiac 224 which is the same as Chevrolet 216 intake manifold and head ports, and Chevrolet-Pontiac 261 which is the same size as Chevrolet 235 intake manifold manifold and head ports. Part# PSA216235.: Set of 3. $27.50

I'm running 216 manifolds on my 235 and not using any adaptor rings.

When I first assembled it I used the adaptor rings which are essentially shortened 235 alignment rings. They seat nicely in the recess in the head's intake port. Then the 216 alignment rings seat in the recess in the manifold and slip into the inside of the adaptor rings in the head.

I was worried that the 216 rings had no seat or step to prevent them from going too far into the head.

After sleeping on it I couldn’t get the thought of the 216 rings slipping down into the intake ports of my head. So I pulled the manifolds off and glued the 216 intake manifold gasket to the manifold to assure alignment and re-assembled it. The engine runs fine

Why not use the 235 set-up on the 235 engine?

I don't understand?

You want to use a 216 carburetor?

All 235 manifolds have the exhaust angling back, not straight down like the 1937-48 216s. If you have a good working 216 carb and a good exhaust system a 216 set-up is an easy way to go and the power difference on a stock 235 is unnoticeable.

Dave,

Was the 1941-48 235 exhaust manifold different (and, the different 235 exhaust manifold used in 1949) different from the exhaust manifolds used on 216s in those same years?

After I wrote this I was thinking I should have said, 1950-62 235 angles back. The 1941-49 truck 235 used the straight down dump 216 manifold.

For me there were a couple of reasons. I had the complete manifold and carburetor assemblies both the 216 and 235.

One was the straight down exhaust on the 216 was a direct bolt up to my stock exhaust pipe. Two was the '53 235 had a primitive automatic choke and I wanted to stay with a manual choke. And 3 was the horn mounting boss on the 216 that I wanted.

I'm fairly sure that I have sacrificed some performance, but then just how fast do you want to go with a fairly stock '41 while setting on top of the gas tank.

Thanks. Just never thought of putting a 216 setup on a 235.

Dennis, Aside from originality my 235 exhaust manifold outlet angles back at about a 15 degree angle which will create interference with my steering gear box directly below it

If I use the 216 manifold which exhaust straight down as it was in the original set up I avoid some exhaust plumbing issues.

Also the 216 manifold has the horn bracket cast on it.

Consequently I preserve originaly and some of my sanity in not having to relocate/route these items.

Thanks for asking.

Best of luck. And thanks for your patience. I just did not understand. I have a 235 with the casting which could be drilled for a horn. I also did not know about the angle difference.

I learned something. Thanks for that.

I didn't realize the angle difference, either. I will check mine in the morning. I, too, might have an issue with the 235 angle and the steering box. It may be possible to make a set of rings from two sets, 216/235.

I'm glad I sleepily stumble through the forum.

So much to learn, and so little time.

After getting great advice from Kip (Kip's 41). I too used my 216 intake/exhaust/carb setup on a 235. I was able to use the 235 locater rings with a little 'homegrown' porting.
Worked like a champ. The 216 is '46 and the 235 a '53. I did it because the 235 I bought had none of this and the 216 intake/exhaust were powdercoated (see photo) and in my possession. grin
