The more important figure is that all six cylinders be within about 10 PSI from lowest to highest.

A 10% variation (+/- 9 PSI) is acceptable on a low-compression engine like a 216. On the engines with 9.5:1 or higher compression, the rule of thumb used to be 5% pressure difference, but very few engines even today get up into that territory. The era of the high-compression, high-performance engine died with the end of leaded gasoline. Jerry

That being said, my Pontiac, has one cylinder that reads 80 or so when hot, the rest read 120. At idle, you can see with the vacuum gauge, that its not really firing. As soon as the engine is brought above idle, even just to fast idle, the vacuum picks up, and the engine smoothes out. It has been that way for the five thousand miles I have put on it. Bring the engine up to operating temperature by running it at 600 RPM for 20 minutes. Remove all the spark plugs and check the compression on each cylinder. The compression should be 90 PSI with a variation of no more than 5 to 10 LBs.
I started my 38 216 after it ahd sat for 31 years in a barn. I used a spare carb, fuel pump and coil and it started right up. The compression cold ranged from 90 LBs to 130 LBs. I think there is a lot of carbon in some of the cylinders.
Oh and the oil pressure was a very good 14 Lbs, even when warm. However I had to shut it down after about 15 minutes because it was going to overheat. I think the rad may be plugged.
