A 10% variation (+/- 9 PSI) is acceptable on a low-compression engine like a 216. On the engines with 9.5:1 or higher compression, the rule of thumb used to be 5% pressure difference, but very few engines even today get up into that territory. The era of the high-compression, high-performance engine died with the end of leaded gasoline.
