Is there a special way to install the fender welt on the back fenders of a 57 3100?

I tried....and gave up....looks fine without.....My 2Cents....

Jim Carter's catalog indicates that rear fender-welt was not originally used on rear fenders (welting was also not used on Advance-Design rear fenders).

Some people have reported that they have cut off the bead and use the remaining strip and/or use a strip of heavy roofing paper/sheet (attached the fender with seal-adhesive).

Not sure of flange detail on your '57 fenders. On my '40, I used weatherstrip adhesive to hold the welt flange in place before bolting up to body.

I used fender welting on the rear fenders before I read threads on here that none was used on AD trucks from the factory. I cut the welting on angles at the various points where it makes a bend around the fender. I bought a magnet set and a clip set from Harbor Freight for around 15 bucks I think it was. I pre staged the welting and made any trims and cuts to make sure it laid flat on a dry run. I used Super Weather Strip adhesive on the leading edge of the fender and the opposite edge of the welting to create a dual bonding fit. You will have about 4 or 5 minutes to make adjustments to the placement once you start. Do as much work before you start to make it a smooth install as possible. I currently have to get some super weather strip remover to clean up small smudges on the front side of the fender, but all in all I think the look actually came out pretty good considering it never had it originally.

I installed it on both My rear fenders...also My rear fenders
had welting on them when I removed them...Its only common sense to install it as You have a metal fender mounting to a metal box with the potential of water, mud, and debris entering and lying dormant,
causing a rust problem too soon...To install the welting I cut "V"
shaped cuts the entire length of the welting which allows all the bends necessary to install...when installed, the round bead will keep the debris away from the problem area. Bill B.

Great work...do I really have to use the adhesive? I just got the truck back from the paint shop and they left the rear fenders loose and I really dont want to take the fenders off. Can I just cut the V's in the welt and install?

yes you can skip the glue John, only useful to tack the welt on the fender before assembly

Got the welt in. It was very easy...ugly cutting job but heck I will not see it. I left fenders loose in order to get the stepsides on. then will tighten down the fender bolts.

On a 57 stepside, how far would the welt come down on the rear fender? I was not thinking and cut the welt at the front of the fender right where the seam of the stepside step meets the side panel. I hope that made sense. I will post a photo soon.
