High-Torque 6 volt starter has been discussed here before. Well, I found a guy in Oregon that can do this. I sent a starter to him and he converted it. And yes, it is high-torque, there is no comparison as to the way it was before. It spins my 216 like it means business.

This gentleman will also put a 6 volt alternator in your generator case and redo some internal work to your voltage regulator so the wiring will be orginial.

I mention this in case someone may be interested. I have no interest in this, I get the same if you have the work done or not, $0.00.

His name is Don Allen and his web site He makes no mention of the starter on his site. His number is on his site if you want to call.

Sorry if I doubt this one AD, but I’ve heard the discussion before. The only way to get more torque out of the AD starter would be to add an extra set of coils. The only way to do this is to change the case to a longer case like that used in the early Oldsmobile for instance. Other wise there isn’t room for the extra coils.
I bought a set of what was supposed to be “High Torque” coils from a generator rebuilders just to make the comparison in a couple of 216 starters that I had on the bench for rebuilding. There was none! The coil wire cross section was exactly the same as the stock coil and the measured resistance using a high precision HP laboratory grade LCR milliohm meter that will read very low resistance gave me the same reading as the stock coil.
I would suspect that the difference that you noticed is the difference between an old starter and one that has been correctly rebuilt.
Now if anyone can show me or rather document for all of us to see, an actually difference between a stock starter coil and a “High Torque” starter coil I would be willing to listen.

Denny, there are rebuilders who install high performance coils in old 6 volt starters. I have several of them and they crank a lot faster than a starter with regular coils. The guy I use is Commercial Alternator in Johnson City, TX. (830) 868-7594. He's about 30 miles from here. Its a guy and one helper and his wife in the office. He also installed 12 volt coils in a 6 volt starter for me recently. They are not cheap, because he gets someone to hand wind them. But nothing for my old jalopies is cheap except for the spare parts I've had on hand 40 years.

Denny, I was told about this High-Torque 6 volt starter and Don Allen by a guy you works on vintage vehicles here in Southern California. No, I am not experiencing the effects of a previous weak starter. It cranks more like a 12 volt than a 6 volt. I have had three different starters in my 216 rebuilt by different people and they all cranked the same, one was suppose to have been high-torque but didn't hack it. All were good enough to start the engine, but 6 volt weak.

I don't know what Don Allen did to the starter but he did it right and I LIKE IT!

Beings Don Allen has been in the generator, alternator and starter field for over 40 years, I consider him the expert, not you.

Believe what you want, but I have a 6 volt High-Torque starter!!
