| | | | Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 128 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 128 | I am in the middle of a complete frame off restore and I just started the engine for the first time yesterday which was pretty exciting ( 1952 235). The only wiring I have done is the wiring for the coil, distributor, starter, and alternator (converting it to 12v). Well, the engine was running, the alternator was charging, then I went to crank it again to time out the engine and the starter is dead. The battery has full charge and when I send power to the starter, the battery cable just jumps and heats up. What's going on?

I realized the gear was still engaged while the engine was running, so it was spinning with the engine for 2 - 3 minutes. Would this have anything to do with it? How do I test the starter?

The gear is supposed to overrun and prevent the armature from turning, but it's possible the drive locked up and began spinning the armature several times engine speed. That will throw the windings out of the armature and lock it up, as well as creating a dead short. Remove the starter and dismantle and inspect it, or take it to a rebuilder. I'm going to bet it's trashed!

I noticed that the starter bendix was not engaging the flywheel, turned the flywheel until everything lined up and its worked fine since.

If they're not bailing out a few feet of flood water right now, they should have an armature, or a complete starter in stock. They specialize in rebuilding old, hard-to-find electrical parts. They're only a couple of blocks from the Cumberland River, so I'm not sure if they got caught by the flood waters or not.
