The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop Front leaf springs?

I went over a speed bumb slowly the other day and noticed the front suspension bottomed out on the frame. Upon inspection I found this:

They seem shot to me. There is only 1 1/2" between the frame and stop on the drivers side and 2" on the passenger side. Can these be rebuilt or must I find new ones?

we have an inline shop here that will rebuild / reshape springs, but I'm not sure how bad they can get before they tell you to find new ones. I think its pretty pricey too. I think a simple call to an area body shop would be all it would take for you to find out who does it in your area.

Fort Worth Champion Spring did mine a few years ago. Prices have probably gone up but it was about $100 an axle then.

I found a local place called Atlas in Austin, Texas. I will try them first.

Atlas here said $60 a spring. Off to work I go!

ordered some from J C Whitney. they came in three days later. worked perfectly on my '53

Detroit Eaton as well as St.Louis Spring are both good sources for new springs made exactly to original specs, including the type of clamps they use on them. I replaced mine as opposed to getting them re-arched, the leaves tend to wear down into the leaf below and re-arching won't fix that.
