The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop 59 Apache flywheel question

I am replacing the flywheel on my 59 Chevy V8 283. The gears were ground down by the starter engaging while driving. I can't find specs on the wheel to buy a replacement. Does anybody know what the dimensions for the flywheel are? I am guessing it is a 14" 168 tooth, but am not sure. Short of buying several different ones and physically comparing them, I was hoping someone could give me a little guidance. Thanks so much.

You don't have to replace the flywheel because the ring gear is damaged. You can purchase a replacement ring gear from most regular parts stores (Napa, Rock Auto, etc)and have it pressed on by any automotive machine shop. In some cases if the gear isn't damaged too badly it can be turned around and reused. It is a 168 tooth flywheel and was used in cars & trucks for 20+ years. If you do decide to purchase a new flywheel you will also need to match it to the clutch. The clutch could be either 10" or 11". All of this stuff is available in the aftermarket.
