Hello,
I just aquired a 59 Apach Napco pickup and want to do a stock restoration. Some one had put a v8 in it at some point in time and I want to go back to the 235 that it originally came with. My quesion is what is the difference between the car 235 and the truck 235. I know the trucks were front mount and cars were side mount. Will the car block be able to be front mounted? I am new to the 6 cylinder stuff. I have only messed with v8's before. I have access to a 58 235 out of a car and wanted to know if it was worth my while.

The major different is that all 1959/1958 automobile 235s had hydraulic lifters and all 1959/1958 truck 235s had mechanical (solid) lifters.

Carburetors and air cleaners were different. The engine color was most likely different.

Other people will correct this or add to this.

There are many other differences among 235 engines over the years the engines were built (year differences, and car/truck differences).

Shane,

I'd say that 235 engine out of a 1958 car is worth your while.
Have you checked any numbers from that engine to verify it is a 58 235?

Although cars had a hydraulic cam, and trucks had a mechanical cam,
they both used the same blocks from 58-62.

So it is possible that a 58 car block could have the same block casting number as your 59 truck.
The difference would be the casting date code.

Also, from 58-62, some trucks had front side mounts while others had the front center mount.

Have you seen the Resto Pack

If you've messed with V-8's, you're gonna love the 235.
Good luck with your restoration.

I have a 1959 235 that came out of a 59 pickup (original engine) that I am putting in my 54, and the 59 engine was a sidemount. I think the truck engines all had an aluminum timing gear, whereas the car engines had a fiber gear, which is a little quieter.

I believe the 235 is worth your time. Get a catalogue from Patrick's ....520-836-1117. It has the info. on the casting #'s in it to help you. It also decodes the production code as well. That's what I used to locate a 235.

Thanks for all the info. I have no way determine the running condition of the one out of the 58 since it is out of the car but I just found a 61 truck that has a good running 235 but the rest of the truck is rusted badly so I am going to go look at it tomorrow.
