| | THANKS!
For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 22 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 22 | I found this site while researching a re-wiring problem on my 54 3100. I had converted it to 12v and used the original wiring but messed up the fuel gauge voltage reducer and probably fried it. Bought a 12 gauge and decided to re-do the dash harness at the same time. I have an aftermarket turn signal switch - 7 wire - and am stuck trying to get my brake lights and turnsignals to work at the same time.
The posts on this site have helped but I am still having trouble. Anyway. I hope to learn a lot about keeping my truck in shape and look forward to some good discussions. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,215 Moderator | | Moderator Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,215 | Welcome hawkguy54, those wiring problems can be a pain for sure. I also am in the middle of installing my new wiring harness. Others have posted their wiring problems in 'the electrical bay'. Go and check it out, you likely have already. Sometimes when I get stumped, I go on to something else and come back to the wiring problems later on. Just try to not get too frustrated, it's supposed to be a hobby.

I had the flasher connected to the brake switch, which worked the signals. I found the brake wire from the turnsignal switch (7 wire) and when that connected to brake switch the brakes worked but not the signals. So, I spliced the brake wire to the signal wire and connected it to the brake switch. Now both brake lights and signals work, but the truck doesn't start and the battery wears down quickly as if something is sapping power to the starter. The brake switch is connected to a fused relay that goes to the battery and the turnsignal switch is also connected to the relay. I am sure my ignition terminals are hooked up right and the battery hadn't been connected prior to trying to start it so I know I didn't leave anything on.
Any ideas about what is happening would be greatly appreciated. | | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,438 Extreme Gabster | | Extreme Gabster Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,438 | What has happened is you hacked up your wiring system by installing relays where they are not necessary. Also, the flasher should be connected to the input of the turn signal switch, not the brake light switch. Brake wire should not be spliced to any other circuit.
Sounds like you need someone who knows about electric circuits to look at this in person to see what all has been done to it so he can determine how to fix it. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2009 Posts: 639 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2009 Posts: 639 | Hawkguy, if the weather permits I should be in Des Moines this Saturday for the swap meet. I am NOT an electrition but I did rewire my '53, and just last week I wired in my 7 wire turn signal unit. Maybe if time permits I could have a look at your truck(unless someone with more knowledge and experience wants to help a guy out). | | | | | Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 22 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 22 | Thanks for the offer, I haven't been around this weekend. Anyway turns out ignition terminals were NOT hooked up right. Now everything works fine but it may have been over - relayed. | | |
