I am curious since I don't see it on other 235 engines. The PO has a hose running from the oil bath air cleaner to this "opening." Any help is appreciated.

I'm gonna take a guess and say that it's some sort of PCV system. It looks similar to the hookup for the forward control models.

I agree. Aren't those usually on top of the valve cover though?

On the forward control models the hookup was a t the rear of the cover, as the air filter was mounted at the right rear of the engine.

Thanks for the help... I am upgrading to a 2 bbl carb and will not have an oil bath air cleaner. Do I need that hole and if not, how do I cover/seal it up?

Also, (exscuse my ignorance) what is a forward control model?

This is a modification that could be made for positive crankcase ventalation.I would sugest that you keep it in the sinse that gasses are sucked from here and are run thru the engin and out the exhaust.I wished I had found that v cover as I had to make the mod to my engine so the breather tube gases didn't come into the cab.Sell that cover and get one with out that outlet.

Well yo can just weld a plate over the top of the hole, but I would use the hole for a pcv valve and eliminate those crankcase fumes from entering the cab.

My wife is from the Texas panhandle. Our primary home is currently in PA, but we also have a small house in TX to use when we visit her family, go on vacations, etc... So yes, I am from PA and TX. Some day in the future, we be perm rfesidents of TX. I think I was a Texan in a previos life!

As for the pcv valve, how would I install one? I have the hole in the valve cover, and am replacing the oil bath cleaner when I upgrade to to a 2bbl carb.

I have a 1952 forward control model. With a 235 And I do not have this??

My 1952 GMC Grumman Olson Kurb Side (Comet)
3/4 ton forward control chassis.235 inline six cylinder single barrel updraft carb 8 ft. 1080lb. Alloy Body with 300cu.ft. Load space on 104" wheelbase 1 1/4 ton payload capacity on PM 152-22 Chassis.
The Chevy model# is 3700 or 3742 a Commercial ¾ Ton.
3800 is the 1 Ton (Double Duty)
Forward Control Delivery Chassis
It is a step van, short wheel base, with an aluminum body.

The easy way is to use a piece of hose that fits the spigot on the valve cover,long enough to plug a pcv into,and another piece on the other end of your pcv long enough to reach your air filter base. If your air filter doesn't have a spigot to plug the hose onto,the parts stores have kits to do this. They're over with the chrome air filters. Usually about 4 or 5 bucks.Be sure the pcv you choose is installed so air will go through it into the air filter but not into the valve cover. (the pcv may have a different hose size going in than going out.) Should be an easy install.

Thanks for all the help/input. From what I am hearing, this is probably not the original engine since I do not have a forward control truck.

I will be in Texas for 3 weeks starting next week so I will be upgrading to a 2bbl carb and adding the pcv then. I'll keep you posted.

Good info here in the 1947-1954 truck factory assemble manual,section 6 sheet 13.00,5.02.The one I used on the modification for my 53,3100 was modled after the one on Sect.0 sheet 4.00. Workes great.Aso a great talking item at the showes.Good luck.
