Hey all I was servicing the driveshaft yesterday and I thought the middle carrier was a bearing, Then I found it is a rubber "boot" that supports the end of the enclosed shaft and it looks like it acts as a seal. Does anyone have experience rebuilding these? Jim Carter's has a 3/4 ton drive shaft carrier bearing rubber cushion, is this the correct piece?

I think the parts in Carter's catalog are probably what you are looking for. However, they are improperly named. The carrier bearings are inside the rear end. The center bearing and cushion is what supports the drive shaft in the center. I would call them and make sure. However it is very often that the center bearing is misnamed and it makes ordering parts difficult when you only have part numbers and no picture.

Great pics- Where did you get your Center support rubber- looks like a chevs of the 40's label?

Hi -

I will be installing a New Process A-833 4-speed overdrive transmission in my '49 Chevy 3600 pick-up. Do you think I should modify my existing two-piece drive shaft or go with a more modern style two-piece driveshaft?

I would probably go with a new driveshaft, but I am not an expert. My truck has a half enclosed-half open shaft.

Not sure what label you're talking about Sam? I don't remember where I bought the support. One of the "Big four", Chevy Duty, Chevs of the 40's, JC, or The Filling Station.

in one of your pics the rubber is still in the bag with a printed label on it. I will check out the filling station, I have checked the others.
