Hi there,

I am in the process of restoring my 1954 pick-up and I have a problem attaching the clutch fork onto the tranny. The tranny is already on truck, but when I try and slide the fork onto and through the hole in the side it gets hung up.

Is there a better way to attach the clutch fork, or do I need to simply wiggle it and work it on? I am trying to avoid having to take apart the tranny, so any help is appreciated.

Hy Rucking Chevy, I'm not 100% sure, but I think the throwout arm [clutch fork] has to be installed before the tranny. I think the "ears" are too wide to go through the slot in the bellhousing. Anywayt I've never tried to do it any other way, than to have the throwout arm in place before installing the tranny, good luck.

I don't think it will go in that way either. The opening is large enough but the clutch is in the way. You might try turning the engine a little to find a lower section on the clutch. I take it the throwout brg. is in there.

Thanks for the tips. Suffice it to say, this is the first automotive project I have ever taken on, so I know there are bound to be setbacks. I was sort of figuring that I would have to take the Trans apart.

The throwout bearing is in there, I should have probably consulted someone before putting it all back together myself.

It is very helpful to have a shop manual, as well as an assembly manual. Both are available as reprints.

The clutch fork and throw out bearing need to be in place before installing the transmission.

I am almost certain I had the fork out with the trans still in,if you remove the inspection cover I think you can get the fork up through it with a little finaggling. When I first put my 37 togather the clutch did not work right as I had the wrong fork and linkage with a original 37 bellhousing so I installed modified a original 37 fork to use on a modern throw out bearing and I dont think I had the trans out that time.

I'll keep trying to wiggle it in, it keeps bumping up against the clutch fork ball stud. I slid the throw out bearing on the spindle of the tranny. Worst case is I take it all apart.

Its been 10 years since I done that and I might have removed the ball but I know I got the one fork out and the modified 37 fork in with the trans still in the truck.
