My friend has a very nice 55 2nd series he restored about 15 years ago. It has an automatic 4 speed w/the hydramatic trans. He was wondering if this was rare or just as common as the others that year.

I don't know about "Rare" but it is uncommon. As an option, I don't think the Hydramatic is one that many people go crazy for, it has a smaller following than a similar 3 or 4 speed truck. I myself like them.
