1950 Chevy 1/2

I was reading a thread on here about an electric fan motor, A comment was made by a stovebolter about the Newport electric wiper motor (sold by classic parts ) not clearing the choke.

I purchased the Newport from classic parts back in January. When I placed my order with Classic Parts I ordered the USA Brand they offered. When It arrived it was a NEW PORT MODEL #NE4753CT.

I attempted to install it yesterday and sure enough, the choke cable interferes, also the lugs on the switch if installed in the stock location hit the motor bracket.

I called Classic Parts about the problem, they will let me return it and get a store credit.

I then called NEW PORT They offer two Models for the for the 47-53 Chevy/ GM truck

The #NE4753CT and the #NE4753CCT

The Part Classic parts sold me was the #NE4753CT

If you want to clear the stock choke you need the #NE4753CCT

The Person I spoke to at Newport was very helpful and offered to modify my bracket to clear the choke cable, and switch So I decided to mail it to him. I’ll have to pay shipping

If you’re going to convert to electric wipers it may be best to order directly from New Port.

Classic Parts should disclose the interference problems in the item description.

Are you going with 6 volt or 12 volt?

I have a 12volt system.

I should of mentioned that

Also the Tech at Newport mentioned that If your mounting the switch in the stock location you may have to slightly bend the lugs.

Thanks. I am staying with the 6 volts in my 48. I would like to know how you come out on this. I would like to put the 6 volt wiper motor in my truck.

Best of luck

I did not know that Classic Parts wiper motor came from Newport. That is good to know.

Do you know if the unit that can clear the choke cable also clears the original radio then?

I just sent back the older version to Classic Parts, I too think it should be mentioned in the sales literature about the choke.

Also, the sweep was 2/3 of the glass with no slack in linkage, and the speed was dismal. The fast speed was slower that my slow speed on my late model car.

Please let me know if any or all of these issues are resolved on the new version.

Thanks.

Classic Parts of America does offer New Port Engineering wipers, but you need to request a New Port Wiper kit. They sell other kits as well.

Well then, I am not sure what I got. Their catalog and sales people did not offer a choice, but that's under the bridge by now...

I am happy to give your "stock choke" version a try. I just ordered one.

I assume it clears the original radio right?

Can I expect the speed to be equal to a late model car?

Thanks

No problem Rolf

I learned of this problem by reading your post on
"Need 12V blower motor for a 1952 truck"

My New wiper motor should arrive today. I try to install it tonight and post pictures.

I don’t have an original Radio so maybe when you get yours you can provide info on if it clears. If it doesn’t clear call the guys at Newport and maybe they can design something. My phone calls with them have been very positive.

Good luck

Installed the wiper motor. Newport model 4753CCT on my 1950 3100

It clears the choke cable, and looks like it will clear an original radio.

Had to adjust the park to keep the wiper arms from binding. I also got a couple of longer 10/32 screws for the mounting location.

Can't test the sweep yet, windshield is not installed.

Working on modifying the switch to accept original type knob.
here are a few pic's

Not wanting to hijack your thread but, did you have any electrical problems? Mine keeps blowing the fuse. I have traced the wires looking for a pinch or short and did not find one. Could a bad ground cause this, or did i get a bum unit?

I was only able to test the motor with the battery. My truck isn’t wired yet. I used a 6amp inline fuse while I ran it to check the wiper transmission arms.

Thanks, I'll report the problem when I figure it out. I hate electrical problems.

I installed my Newport unit last night, and it seems faster than the one I got from Classic Parts. It cleared the stock choke and will certainly will clear the original radio.

The sweep on the drivers side is somewhat shorter, but I think I just have to compromise a little between the parking position and sweep.

Classic Parts sells a stock looking plastic knob that looks better than the modern knob, but if looks a bit cheesy.

I will look at the swap meets for something old timey, or I would just buy one of those plastic things.

I will "hope" for some rain, and I will give it the acid test.
