Hi, I just purchased a 1946 Chevrolet 3/4-Ton truck, series "DR" 125-1/4" Wheelbase.
I think it’s a Model #3603 cab & chassis, with an period-correct aftermarket "Stake Rack”. 12-Volt System.

Photo Attached: http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo352/46Canopy/19463-4ton.jpg

I did a search, but did not find anything close. May I ask for an expert opinion? I am unable to ID the engine. The engine is too new for me to even come close to figuring out what it is.
Here are the casting numbers:
Passenger side of block, lower, above starter, close to firewall: CON 2 (0 or C) 24
Center of block: 3850817 0 then below that is GM 20
Flange aft of distributor, stamped: F0402B

It needs a tune-up real bad, and I want to be sure to purchase the correct parts.
Thank you for your help,

Dale

Hy 46Canopy, according to the Inliners International website that casting number is for a 1962-78 230 or 250, the stamped number could indicate a 1964 or 74 engine, hope that helps.

Thanks 3B,

Any other way to narrow it down? Any visual difference between the 230 / 250?
It has an electronic choke if that helps? And two rectangular push rod covers, with a hose connected to the valve cover to the underside of the air filter.

Hy 46Canopy, 230s and 250s look identical on the outside, they even have the same bore, the difference is in the stroke. If the engine is 1975 or newer it will have an H.E.I. [High Energy Ignition] distributor [large cap, with wires in a retaining plate] if it has a point type distributor then the tuneup parts should be the same regardless of which displacement it is, hope that helps.

Using your engine serial number with the 'B' suffix.

The F signifies a Flint built engine.
04 is April
02 is the second day of the month
'B' Chuckthetruck list says 64' passenger app 230 with powerglide.

This list may not be complete but I didn't notice any other years with the 'B' suffix.

If it's a 1964, then it's a 230.
The 250 didn't arrive until 1966.

Okay,
So it appears to be the following:
Built April 2, 1964 in Flint Michigan
Due to age it will be a 230 CID
It is mated with a “Powerglide”

And due to the last stamped letter (B) it was applicable to the 1964 Biscayne/Bel Air/ Impala/Caprice.

Biscayne/Bel Air/Impala/Caprice
A - 230cid w/manual trans
AE - 230cid w/manual trans, heavy duty clutch
AF - 230cid w/manual trans, AC
AG - 230cid w/manual trans, AC, heavy duty clutch
B - 230cid w/Powerglide

So, I can now look for a Chilton’s repair manual for the above vehicles to assist in dialing in the engine.
Thank you gentlemen!
