I planned on using the stock 1 Ton springs even though I was swapping the axle out for a newer one....
On my way of taking the axle apart, I realized that the 1 ton Leaf springs are 2 parts. Can I remove the added set that sits on top of the main springs and just run the 8 springs together?

No it won't be any softer when empty than it was before when empty. The overloads don't come into play till some load is already in the truck.
