I have a unrestored Gmc and the front and rear window gaskets are all covered with body color paint. This makes sense because it was a production line paint job and not an individual restoration. By the way this is original paint not a repaint. If you are restoring to original should the gasket be painted or not, forgetting which looks better? comments please. doug | | | | | Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 400 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 400 | You might want to look under therubber to see if the color is the same as the body, or if it is different. It doesn't sound right to me, Mine are regular rubber black and original also. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 | I've never seen any painted rubber from the factory, "production line" paint jobs were/are done before final assembly, there's no glass in place when pieces are being painted [why waste time/labor/money masking things off?] .... if yer talkin the 41 in yer profile, the windshield frame would have been painted before the glass was installed, if your rubber [frame to cab or between glass and frame] is painted, a glass shop did it or a PO did it to try to keep the rubber from deteriorating Bill | | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 154 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 154 | I agree with all who responded. The rubber windshield gasket should be unpainted. I just replaced the glass in my 1946 big bolt. The rubber gasket for the front windshield can be bought from Jim Carter. It'not that hard to replace the old with new. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 64 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 64 | To all who responded to my question thanks. I did pull the window, front ,today on the 41 GMC and the result was a black widow. The original colors are red cab black fenders. The frames\'s upper hing brackets are red. Fairly sure this is original because the broken glass on the passenger side pretty well rusted out the inside channel. Just something else to take care of. By the way the front window regulator works like a champ, got lucky there . doug | | | | | Joined: Jul 2008 Posts: 176 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jul 2008 Posts: 176 | Couple pics to illustrate what others have said: Factory photo. The frame is body color in the inside too, because it was painted before glass was fitted and assembly. My windshield frame and both my door glass frames came black from the factory. | | |
