| | THANKS!
For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 165 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 165 | I brought a 6500 in to finish up for a guy, the usual, brakes bearings, tires, leaks, and glitches, has a2 spd under the dash ,vacume in both positions but won't go to high it goes to nuetrul, hoses are on correct, I may have to pull and se if the fork is haywire, it looks as if someone replaced the pot recently maybe they jammed up something, I haven't brought the se # in yet but it is susposed to be a 53, would it have come out the door with a 292 and how can I identify it, I also need to buy some replacement goodies, I don't remember if it was on this site or the GMC site guys were talking about repop venders I've used Carter in the past but is there an opinon on some others, I need things like wiper control, maybe a new temp guage, there was a new one instaled but it doesn't work, need a radio and such, I've searched a couple things here but nothing ran out at me. Thanks | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 | You say you brought it in to finish. It doesn't sound like much has been done. The 292 was a totally different generation of engines and did not come out until about 1962. The quick way to identify it is by its 2 piece push rod cover and distributor towards the front of the engine. Just about everything in the cab except the 2 speed control is the same as in a pickup and repops are available. However, brakes, bearings, 2 speed vacuum controls are obsolete. Brake parts ble as well as bearings as well as bearings are available, but they are very expensive. And of course there are 6 tires instead of 4 and they are not cheap either. I have several GMC's two ton and up. The only reason is because I have been in the trucking business for over 45 years and I collect them. I hope whoever is paying the bill is prepared to spend big bucks and end up with a truck that is worth very little if it has to be sold.

Dist is in the center and the cover is one piece, I've got reline shops for brakes and all the hardware and turn the drums. We've got new tirs sitting on a project that isn't going to be gotten to for a while so those tires are getting moved over. I had thougvht that the 292 was an earlier motor than 62, I thought our 57 came with one but maybe not. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,214 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,214 | Your 1957 could have had a 261... Mike B | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 165 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 165 | I have the numbers off of the head block and door if someone has a way to check to see what is what, on the head is B39 913 241 570 and 3835913, the block is LAA694917 and the door post is X53LOO9223. Plus a couple questions does the 53 235's have an oil filter, this one does but its an 8" canister that is bolted to the inner fender panel right above the steering box I thought filter cans were mounted on the intake manifold is this right or am I dreaming, also do the 235's have a pcv valve this one has one plus an oil filler with the breather hose, and the core support doers it have a strut across the front of it to hold it together, this one did have one spot welded to it at one time but it looks like if it was then you couldn't get the front clip off with it still welded to the support, I'm not sure what to do about that.
Thanks for any help. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 165 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 165 | Thankyou Tim, I may loose the oil filter, I see that Chevs of the 40's has what looks to be a bracket that fits the manifold and the filter bolts to it, if so I may stay with it, front clip came off yesterday and the motor and trans today, mainly for a good steam clean and paint work, the motor paint for 53 says someting about blue but I have no lead thru Napa do you have a # on it, 40's has it but it'll be a week till I see it and its 15 bucks a can. And I still can't figure out the core support is there a bar that connects the two uprights together including the fenders, is it welded or just floats with the fenders.
Again Thankyou | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 165 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 165 | I've looked thru the on line manual and in various parts books, I'm starting to think that the core support is different in the trucks than the pickups despite what the books show this truck has a core mounting in the center rather than two bolts spaced apart the books show 53 to be spaced apart, also the top cross from fender to fender looked to be welded to the supprot at one time but here again the books don't show that piece in the new kit is it welded to the support or just bolted to the fenders. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | Yes, there are different styles of radiator supports in different sizes of trucks. Perhaps people are not answering because there also seem to be differences in different years. Here are part numbers through 1954. The differences in the different parts is the more difficult information to obtain/provide. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 165 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 165 | Thanks Tim I started to figure that out today and then it was confirmed by Rob and Joe that this was common in those years. Thankyou
