OK, I've been reading all about the transmissions here, everyone talks about t-5's, nv4500 and such.
What I would like to know is,Is there a straight across swap to a 5 speed/od trans from the sm420/465? headscratch

Be careful calling yourself a expert, because an "EX" is a hasbeen and a"SPERT" is a drip under pressure.

Clark?

What truck are we talking about? I would not reccomend the t5 for a 2 ton. The NV4500 and the Clark would be OK. The Clark transmission was available as an option.

I didn't think until after I posted, but, myself I have the 2 ton with the brake on the rear of the transmission.
Will that trans accept the brake mechanism or is there some modifications?
Do you keep the bell housing from the sm420/465?
Any cutting of the driveshaft?

Just looking for info for right now, can't afford anything to buy, adding to the wish list.

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,
Maybe repost this question in the big bolts section. I don't have info on the Clark, but it should have the brake on it.

As for the NV4500 certain versions have it others don't. I believe the early chevy 2wd version has a brake, but it doesn't match up to your bellhousing. The dodge version will bolt up with an adapter plate. You might have to get a hybrid NV4500, dodge input shaft, and chevy tailshaft. One more Monkey Wrench to throw in the works... The speedometer is easier to hook upwith the dodge version. You might check to see if any of the chevy units with the break even have a speedo gear. The chevys used a velocity sensor, and I think the sensor lived in the rear axle.

It doesn't have to be for a big bolt, others might want to know for their little trucks.

I only mentioned the big bolt section because that is where the Clark is most commonly found. If any 5 speed was gonna be a direct swap, it would be the Clark. I would imagine when going from an sm420 or sm465 to a 5 speed, there will always be driveline work. Of course I don't have facts to back this up, but a new driveshaft would be needed with the NV4500 or the T5 if you had the sm420 originally.
