For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Mar 2009 Posts: 7 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Mar 2009 Posts: 7 | Was fooling around on the web and found a site called Wheel Vintiques. They are making oe style wheels for the AD 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. The only size so far is 16x6 and I think wider and you can get it in any back spacing you want including original. They say an 11-5/8" cap will snap over the lugs or they can supply baby moons to fit. I thought it would be an option other than 19.5 wheels. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 237 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 237 | Make sure they will fit over your rear brake drums. 16"ay be too small a diameter.
Keep in mind that the gearing is really low on these trucks and your top speed will really suffer with a smaller diameter tire. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 381 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 381 | Also check that the 16x6 wheels and tires clear your tie rod ends. I'm thinking that you may have a spacing problem. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 38 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 38 | I looked at the same wheels and wondered the same questions. Tie rod clearence should not be a problem since you can get these wheels in any back space you want including original. Also, if you use a 6" wide tire with original backspacing you should be ok. The truck I have now a 54 1 Ton came with some weird alumanim mag wheels and were about 10" wide. Only when the steering was hard over to either side did the tie rod end rub on the rim. As for the wheels fitting the rear drum, the OE wheels for the 3/4 and 1 ton were 15" as I recall, with 17" being optional. As for smaller diameter tire playing havoc with engine rpm and road speed, you can get 16" lite truck tires in diameters close to what the 17" tires were. I'm still not completely sold on them but they sound promising. | | |
