if that is the case how do you get the original motor number for your records
Look on your registration, sometimes the trucks are registered by the engine number.

behind the dip stick on the flat area of the block there is no # what so ever. it is as clean as can be. how do they produce a motor with no # on it. i have counted the head bolts and did find it was a 216.some of you say that some states use this # in the title and licensing. is there another # on the frame?
Factory replacement engines came out of the factory without numbers stamped on the milled area on the block. It was up to the installer to stamp them with the original numbers, but it was not always done.
If it does not have an engine number stamped into the block and you want one, find a scrap block with the same casting numbers and stamp the new block with the serial numbers. Nothing illegal about doing that, but be sure that your truck was not registered with the engine number, if it was, just use the number on your registration.
Your truck will not have a number stamped on the frame. The only numbers are on the engine itself. There is a body tag with the body number on it, but it will differ from the engine number.
