They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 64 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 64 | thanks wrenchbender i have chance to pick up a 59 car 3 speed with a after market floor shifter set up. it is complete with bell houseing and clutch assembly. $50 although it does not have the long tailshaft that my 32 1959 fleetside has i suspect based on what you have said that the car 3 speed ought to accept the tailshaft. thanks

I believe the trannies are the same up to the rear of the main case, but the car tranny is definately not the same length as the truck tranny for the 58 and 59 model years, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,102 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,102 | You can use the truck tail shaft and mainshaft on the car trans, as stated previously the case & internal parts are the same. You should probably replace the rear bearing, rear bushing, and seal while it is apart. The lower mount bolt holes on the car trans are not threaded so you will need some longer 1/2" bolts w/nuts. You can also use the truck side cover if you are retaining the column shifter. Fred

If I recall correctly, the 1958-59 Impalas could come with both the wide-ratio 3-speed (1st gear 2.94;1) or a close-ratio 3-speed (1st gear about 2.5:1) transmission as an option. I believe that all of the light trucks in 55-59 came with wide-ratio 3-speed. I don't believe that this should affect the interchangability of the tailshaft.
