I'm pulling my 420 from my '54. Question is: should I remove the shifter first? It looks like there is a pin that holds it in place. If I remove the pin with the top part detonate and release a bunch of parts?

Thanks in advance

You don't pull the pin. There is a little collar there around the ball that you can push down and turn about a quarter turn. This releases the handle and it pops right out.

The other way to do it if you can't get that collar to turn is to just remove the shift housing from the top of the transmission. Just put it in neutral and remove all the bolts, it pops right off. Then you can inspect the gears. You just have to make sure the shift forks fit into the collars when you put it back on.

tlorber,

I don't know if you have your rig up on jack stands, but if you do, leave the shifter on. After you pull the floor pan and remove all the transmission bolts, it is real easy to stand in the cab, and while straddling the shifter, wiggle the snout out and lower the tranny to the ground using the shifter as your "handle".

Get a tranny jack!!! Those 420's are heavy, I know about trying to manhandle one of them by the shifter. I don't reccomend it, unless you're built like Hulk Hogan.

LONGBOX55,

I am 6'2" and 200lbs. I have been dropping those through the floor for many moons...by myself! These, in my opinion, are dainty! Save the transmission jack for a 15 speed roadranger. grin

The last time I messed with a 420, getting it out wasn't so bad. It was putting it in that caused the problem. The fella that owned the truck had ahold of it from the shifter while I was under it to start the bolt in the bellhousing. Well, to make it short, the cheap floor jack that we were using to support it let go, and I took the brunt of holding it up and shoving it in. I don't want to do that again.

Bill,

The SM420 weighs in at 135 lbs. Maybe it just seems heavy when you are stuck under it trying to breath. smile

I agree with Longbox and atomarc...they're only heavy when you're under them. When I pulled mine I was on bottom and my son was in the "shifter" position. He is a high school wrestler that competes at 189 lbs and is built like a brick sh#$ house, but he didn't expect the full weight of the tanny when it finally dropped free...fortunately my chest made a nice shock absorber to keep it from damaging the garage floor.

Thanks all for the replies. I got it out last night. I Micky'ed a wooden support for the floor jack and came down pretty easily. The PTO made it a bit more difficult but not that bad. I was surprised at how little clearance you have for the bolts. I had to use a box wrench instead of a socket. Fortunately (I guess) they weren't torqued on that hard. When I get everything cleaned up (sometime in 2008?) I'm putting in a T5. It weighs nothing so it shouldn't be a big deal.

Thanks again.
