Started draining all the old fluids from my truck today and when I took the drainplug out of the oilpan I had to poke thru a thin layer of black/silver goo to get it to drain.It wasnt really metalic,more like a grease.Found the same thing in the bottom of my oil filter canister.I dont believe this is from the engine.The truck has been in my family since new and it has set most of its life in a barn.Ive heard stories of old paraffin based oils,not sure if any of its true or not but could this be from that?Do I need to take the pan off and clean it out or is this something normal to find on an old truck?58 GMC 270 ci

Straight mineral oil had a lot of paraffin or wax in it and it did settle out over time. What you have found is very common. The black/silver is carbon, not metallic. This is also common and nothing to be alarmed by. I wouldn't even bother to remove the pan. The paraffin will become liquid when it is hot. Change the oil, run the engine hot and pull the plug while its hot and let it drip a while. You might want to then drive it a few miles and drain it again.

i found the oil that had been sitting in my 262 hudson engine for years looks brand new and golden on the dip stick but, i was advised to pull the pan because some of the contaminates that settled out might clog the pick up when i start it. i still haven't got around to doing it, but i think i might do it just to be sure. i am not saying you are wrong at all crenwelge, i don't know. i wonder if mine would be fine, but i hate to take a chance.

Pulling the pan on a 58 GMC is quite simple. It might be worth peace of mind to drop the pan, but I wouldn't try to clean anything else.

when i got the ashton i pulled the pan because the gasket leaked. all i found was four inches of sludge on the bottom and a broken lock washer in the sludge. i guess the washer was a part the engine didnt like so it spit it out.

Im going to drop the pan just for piece of mind.The gasket is less than 10 bucks and thats cheap insurance.Might go ahead and put a new oil pump in while im in there.Where is everyone getting thier oil pumps at?

i was pretty amazed how new that oil looked up top in my 262. i had never seen anything like that before, was told it was common on old oil to seperate out like that. who knows if it would be a problem or not.

I have two part numbers for oil filters for the 270.One is WIX 51001 and the other is WIX 51503.The 51503 is to tall to fit.The 51001 fits but it is a strugle to get the top back on the filter can.Is this normal or is there another filter?

The AC number is P112, Fram is C100. Wix 51001. Any of these will fit.
