so from what I understand now I have a 224 under the hood and I have searched and searched but I have not found anything that mentions a 224 I-6 engine.

Hy sask42, as I told you in another post, a 224 is a .0625 overbored 216, I believe all the parts except the pistons will interchange. Egge Machine in California specializes in older/antique engine parts, and may have .080 or larger overbore pistons available for the 216. Or if your 224 pistons are in good shape, you could find an old 216 block and have a machine shop bore it to use your 224 pistons. Have you pulled the head off yet to confirm the bore is indeed 3 9/16"?

If you do a Google search for your casting numbers eg: (casting xxx), you will find a document with all the Canadian motors. That motor was used in Pontiacs and it is a pumped up 216. I think the Pistons are probably the only thing that differs from the 216. I think I saw parts for them on the Kanter site.

The pistons are nothing special, they are just standard bore 235 pistons. In fact you can bore any 216 .0625" over to make this engine.

Hy Pre '68 Dave and guys, while it is true that the 224 and 235 share the same standard bore size of 3 9/16" they do not share the same stroke. The 224 has a stroke of 3 3/4", the 235 has a stroke of 3 15/16", this may result in a difference in compression height. The two pistons don't appear to have any in-common part numbers according to my parts book.

A 235 block is taller to except the longer stroke.

Ok I will throw a wrench in this topic. I went and dug around and did google my block casting numbers and it came up with a 228 not a 224. The 228 has a 3 9/16 bore and from what little I have found on this website in reference to the 228 it sounds to me like it is a full presure not a splash oil, Now the oil gauge goes to 60 psi on the dash and I just assumed that it is the original gauge. I haven't taken the motor apart since I have made it run with a whole lot of elbow grease and some luck but I am also the type where if I cant get the parts to repair it I will do other things with the truck like mod it for a retro truck to haul my dad's truck around. Would this also be why on the serial tag the engine number starts with a letter and I know it is a replacement block since the first one threw a rod in it shortly after the truck was bought.

Did you look at this site:
http://clubs.hemmings.com/clubsites/chevytalk/GMhistory/canchev.html

That is where the Canadian Casting numbers will be. There is one for the head and one for the block.

Does it have GMC on the valve cover? Does the side/push rod cover come up to the valve cover (around the spark plugs)? A 228 is a GMC only motor, full-pressure lubrication to the rods as you stated, has a short side cover and GMC on the valve cover. The serial number also usually starts with the engine size (228). A 224 looks exactly like a 216; valve and side covers.

Have you visited the oldgmctrucks.com website?

228 gmc motors are good motors with plenty of parts available. They are also easily replaced by the gmc 270 and gmc 302 6 cylinder motors.

It doesn't say gmc on the cover or anything for that matter the tin on the side goes around the spark plugs and i know it is a replacement engine and the numbers were not stamped into it ( in a earlier post ) i have checked the afore mentioned sites but as I am young and dumb where it concerns automotive older then the 60's I really don't understand how to read it also I am puzzled by the T prefix on the serial tag that gives a number but when i try to look it up it may appear to be a overstock 41 put into the truck? I will try to get the casting numbers and post them and maybe someone will be nice enough to help.

The way you described the covers would indicate a 224 (or 216, or early 235 for that matter). Since it is a Canadian model I really don't know anything except what I read on this site and elsewhere.
I don't guess we know what year, model or series your truck is. That might help us identify what engine "should" be in it.
Good luck.

Something is fishy here. Is it a 224 or a 228? It really should not be that difficult to tell them apart. American trucks got the 228 gmc motor. Early Canadian trucks got the 224. GMC would be stamped on the valve cover and 228 would be the first 3 numbers on the pad by the distributer. Even if it was a replacement block, 228 would be stamped.

60 lb oil guage may indicate that your truck was born American, and somewhere along the lines got a Canadian 224 or Chevy 216.

You have positively identified this engine as a 224 and a 228 by numbers. Where are you getting the information to make these claims?

Sorry for the long reply and thank you to all who have tried to help.

From what I have just recently learned ( from vintage gmc resto kit) that it was re- engined with a 224 some time during the war. it was built in Oshawa, Ont. so it is a Canadian truck.

Thanks for the info.

I think Kanter lists rebuild parts for the 224. Now Kanter doesn't really make the parts so they are around. New pistons would be made by Egge, I would think. When I recently purchased new Egge pistons for my 216, I found out that the ring design was different from original, much thinner. I would advise that if you buy new pistons, get the rings from the same supplier.
