O.K. Here it goes. I finally bought my first Chevy truck. It is a 1964 C20 in nice overall shape. I took all the info from this site on buying a truck, it helped lots, all bad area were good.
Now I have to do a brake job and a exhaust replacement.
I need assistant with the rear drum removal. My first truck, my first Eaton H052. How do I remove the drums? Do I need special tools or will an impact and socket work?
Also my exhaust gasket needs replacing. Is there anything to look out for on the removal of the exhaust manifold. THANK YOU MIGUEL

Hy Born Lucky, welcome, please remember to tell us what engine you're asking about. As to the rear drums, they can be removed after the wheels have been removed, there are three screws that hold the drum to the hub, once the screws have been removed you should be able to get the drum off. You may have to back the brake shoe adjustment off a bit to get the drum off. There is another way to get the drum off, but if all you want to do is remove the drum, then that is the way to do it, hope that helps.

I have the 292 engine in the truck.
As far as the brake job I have researched and there are no screws, just eight bolts and what appears to be plate that has two bumps in the center of the bolt pattern.The wheels are off so I am looking at the drums and the axles.

Remove the 8 bolts, pull axle, gasket locknut/keyed plate, adjuster nut, bearing and the drum hub assy, if it's a 3/4 ton....

the axle removal is pretty easy like 1958gmcnut says. the exaust manifold gasket is one piece with the intake. if it's a 292 i would check the straightness of the manifolds when removed and have machined if needed. the gasket is pretty easy to install. you might want to install studs in the very ends where the dowels are. good luck!!!

With the removal of the axle do I need any special gaskets? Alos, what should I replace(buy at auto store) for the reassembly.

On the manifold you said to install studs where the dowels are. Do I need to tap the hole or is the hole already threaded?

I had a 1966 c20 and i have a special socket that fits in the opening to remove the large nut.Follow what 1958gmcnut said,it's not hard at all.You can use rtv silicon to make a gasket for the axel shafts,or buy them.If i remember right,my 1966 had metal axel gaskets.

What are the torque setting for reassembly?
I have read 35-40?

they sell the sockets at oreilly's but i don't think the have the center piece that keeps it centered. i used a hyd jack under the socket so i could put pressure. i think the torque adjustment is much higher in the shop manual then back off 1/6 turn or something. they also sell the metal gasket it was real cheap. the studs are threaded in and twist out with vice grips (usually!). good luck!
