Hey Everyone!

This is for all you Canopy Express Owners.
Did the CE's have a actual rod that came w/ the truck to hold up and out the canopy or, was it up to the owner to make something that worked? if any of you have any pics with some ideas that would be great!

Also, I am needing to see if any of you guys know where I can get a pattern for the canvas sides and rear.

I didn't think this classified as a parts wanted. If so Sorry for the trouble.

To my knowledge the canopy/canvas snapped into place to close and rolled up to open. Anything else would have been by the owner. You could unsnap the canvas from the body and put it behind the seat or just use a string or the canvas straps and roll it up in place.

A good canvas shop should be able to make a canopy for you from the dimensions from your CE.

I would agree with G, they came with leather straps that tied up the canvas while not in the lower postition. Anything else would be a fine invention of the owner.

David a friend in CA has patterns as he is on his second CE restoration. He uses leather dog collars that match acually really will, and look nice to boot.

Neals49 I have a 49 suburban and several week ago inquired about putting wood strips in the back. In some of the 49CE pictures it shows a wood bed. Was this standard for CE and if so do you know of a vendor who makes the kits? I was hoping a standard 1/2 ton truck had same profile as rear of suburbans but have not been able to verify. Thanks,

As far as I know all the CE's had wood beds.
you can get one from www.mar-k.com the have it in several wood selections.
Also the 1/2 ton trucks are not the same as the CE's on the wood bed kits.

As far as I know the Carryalls/Suburbans actually use a plywood style floor there are several guys on here, who have already been down your road, surf the forums or post a new one to gather your info. They will be glad to help you.

As for the CE they have the same floor as a standard panel truck.
Boards and bed strips. As far as I can tell all the same.

Planks were used in the first few years and plywood after I believe 1951. Tim has the info on this or you can do a search. All three of my CE's have the planks. 1948 1949 1950

A 1984 article in the Light Commercial Vehicles Association magazine (now Vintage Truck magazine) had the following information about changes in 1950 Advance-Design trucks: " . . . the floor boards of panel and canopy express models were changed to plywood construction. In the new construction a single panel of wood and five skid strips replaced thirteen floor boards and twelve skid strips. The new floor was positively sealed against dust leakage and the plywood made the floor 25 to 30% stronger than the former construction."

The March 15, 1950 Chevrolet Truck Data Book Supplement states that Panel/Canopy Express (Single Unit Body) Floors - changed to 1-piece, 5-ply. Prior to this 13 pieces of woods were used in the Panel and Canopy Express rear floor.

49bourbon can thus be assured that the responses he received need not be further verified: pickup wood is not the same as the wood used in any 47-55 Panel/Canopy-Express/Suburban truck.

Canopy Man's link to Mar-K is quite helpful. They do not specifically state the 1949 Canopy Express board kit has 13 pieces but the same year Canopy/Panel bed strips (1/2 ton only) come with 12 pieces, "to fit around the wheel tubs". They sell this kit for Canopy/Panel through 1952?

Unfortunately, they do not seem to sell Suburban plywood or later Panel/Canopy plywood;but, they sell 5 metal strips for the later Canopy/Panel plywood (the strips went on top of the later plywood, maybe in grooves?).

If someoeone is needing a 3/4x5ftx10ft piece of plywood, check with a good plywood warehouse that sells mdo. that size is used alot in some sign shops. in the dfw aera, you can check with, plywood company of ft. worth
