I bought a new headlight switch for my truck, because the old one would make the lights flicker a little, and the interior light function didn't work. I installed the new one, but it worked like this...when I pulled it for parklights, parklights came on, so did the tailights. I pulled it all the way, headlights came on, parklights went out ( as they should) but the tailights went out also. The old one, which isnt modified in any way, doesnt do this, so I ended up putting it back in. I have to wonder if the new switch is defective, or if my truck's wiring is that goofed up. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 54 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 54 | Sounds like a little work was done to your wiring harness or a short melted some wires together from your old switch. Do you have a wiring diagram if so you can test the leads coming off the old switch and the new one. 12 GA. Red powers the switch.
20 GA. NATURAL WHITE wire on your light switch harness powers the front parking lights.
14 GA Lt. BLUE goes to your foot dimmer switch.
20 GA. NATURAL WHITE on your switch goes to your Dome Lamp.
20-GA. Orange from the Junction Box powers through the light swich to the...
20-GA. BLACK wire to the tailights.
16-GA. DK. Green from the junction box to the light switch powers the dimmer for interior lights.

I didn't even think to look in there, I just thought it was really wierd that the old switch works properly but the new one doesn't. If there was a short somewhere, I wouldn't be suprised at all, because the plastic connector for the wiring to the switch looks a little melted, and if the truck sits for more than two weeks it needs a boost to start, there's something draining the battery. Likely will rewire it if I ever get to restoring it, until then I'll just use the old switch. It has a hot lead going to it all the time & grounds through the light switch. The light switch must be well grounded to the dash.
