am going to up grade to a 4-spd trans. from a mid to early 80's chevy C-10. have most everything figured out i just don't know if the bell that's in my truck has a big enough hole for the bearing retainer on the new trans. does anyone know if my truck has the large hole for the retainer?
i have the bell from the doner truck but am not ready to upgrade the crossmember and starter just yet.

There were several n the early '80s, and they did use different size retainers. If it's the SM465, it will not be large enough, but I beleive the MY6 is the same as the early 4 speed and 3 speeds. If you are using one with the large retainer, a machine shop can enlarge the bore for you so that you can keep the existing bellhousing.

| | | | | Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 35 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 35 | I have 3 different bell housings that have a different size hole for each one of them. for the newer trannys you will need the aluminum bell housing as for the older 3-4 speeds they all have specific bell housings. the aluminum housing you will need the cross member that bolts to the frame and mounts the tranny in the middle with the 2 bolts, the older trannys have the cross member in place as it is rivited to the frame and requires a tranny with "dog ears" that bolt to the tranny, an even older tranny uses bolts that mount in the middle of the bell housing on the bottom of it. my suggetion is to do an out of vehicle mock up first to see if it is all compatible before installation......... | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | The 68-72 bell housing for the 4 speed had the larger hole. It should fit your present mounts but wont work if you have a hydraulic clutch on the right hand side.

Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum | | | | | Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 14 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 14 | well from what i know it is the my6, i have the bell that came with the trans. but i'm not ready to change the crossmember yet, just thought i'd try to slip it in there and utilize that extra gear till all else comes together. i also have a bell that looks exactly like the one that is in my truck now, has the mounts on the bell but the my6 will not fit in the hole for the retainer. so i just thought that trucks may have come with a larger hole.
and also i do have a hyd clutch, but have most everything to do the hyd throwout bearing won't need the slave...i hope,
any input on the hyd throwout bearing? good/bad
