A guy near me has a 250 from a 1982 Chevy pickup for sale. Are there any good or bad points to the 80's chevy L6 engines?
ie; Were the heads/block etc
the same as other years?
Thanks for any insight,
Mikey

The only major issue with the "newer" 250 engines is the integral head design. This design has the intake cast as part of the head. This design had some issues with the head cracking and used a expensive carb called a varajet. I have never done it but I imagine you could use a earlier head with a separate intake if needed.

Yes, the earrlier head interchanges, as do the ones from 194 and 230 engines. I believe the 194 has too-small valves to be considered for the 250, but the 230 head gives a 250 a nice compression bump and still has fair-sized valves. One trick I like to use is to replace the dish-top 250 pistons with 307 V-8 pistons. They're a drop-in swap, same size, weight, wrist pin diameter, compression height, etc.

One thing to check is the left front head bolt area around the water pump. If that bolt gets torque to tight, you can pull the corner of the block off. The water pump opening is very close to the bolt boss, so check for a coolant leak around the front and side of that corner.

All 230-292 heads will interchange,
