I have done a search and haven't seen this specific question, so I am going to plead for help. I have been looking for a modern sized tire to fit on my 17 inch lock ring rims. I have been squirreling around trying to compute the closest size to try and fit them on my old rims. The old threads report that a 235/85R/16 will work on an old 16 inch rim.

So, the question is: has anyone used a 235/70 or 80R /17 tire on their old rims to replace the 700 or 750 /17 tires ?

Mike,
I'm using 265/70 R17 tires. The wheels are the original split rims on my '42 3/4-ton special. I had the tires put on a year ago, with no problem since then. At the recommendation of my tire guy, I'm running them with tubes. You can see pictures of how they look on the truck here . Let me know if you want more details about them.

By the way, if you have an extra one of those wheels, I sure would be happy to buy it from you. I have four good ones, but I'd feel safer with five.

Jon;

Thanks for the response. I knew there must be a modern solution to the 17" tire problem. I am going to begin the hunt today.

That is a great looking truck! Is it a business vehicle?

I will look for a rim for you and let you know.

Again, thanks

Mike

Mike,
Yeah, it's a shop truck for my bike shop. Great advertising and it makes it fun to deliver bikes.

Anybody else out there using their stovebolt as a business truck?

Yes, I am too. My panel is in no way as nice as yours, I have not even started the body work. I use it in my cabinet making business. I carry my tools in it after hauling my cabinets in my new truck, the 88 and a trailer.

Since I haven't cleaned up the body for a new sign, I thought of having somebody make signage that looks old.

What's wrong with the 7.50 X 17 tires?
You can still get them at about the same price as new type?

Grigg;

There is nothing wrong with the new, old sizes, I just thought there were more choices on tread patterns and less hassles in finding them close by.
