Need to drop in a motor and would like a carbureted V6 or iron duke four.... suggestions on what is best (and cheapest... sorry but money is always an issue)would be appreciated. Don't want anything rare, easy to rebuild, etc. Thinking an old Buick V6? Others that work well? Will also put in a different rear end... S10 or something. Please advise.... and thanks.

I actually have done this conversion when I put a 1939 Chevy body on an S10 extended cab frame because it was the same wheel base... 123 inches if I remember correctly. The project went well and was eventually sold after it was 90% done. I would like to keep the original frame though, and the one truck I found that was done, used the axles from a 1950's Chevy... very little to do except move a perch according to him. Anyway, I have a pretty good idea on this part of the project, but the guy installed a 350 and said he had to move the firewall, which I don't want to do, so I thought a V6 or iron duke would get the job done. Make sense? I just need someone who can give me advice about either of these or another V6 option. I also don't want to mess with fuel injection / computers etc. so do want a carbureted model.

I did a ton of research and contacted Speedway Motors and a tech named Thomas replied.... It has to be a 90 degree engine (4.3 will be fine) in order to use the front cross member motor mounts.... the block has to be based on a SBC motor with the four holed in front by the timing chain cover.... as for a carburetor ... it has to be an aftermarket Edelbrock intake, or, it has to be one of the first 4.3 motors that came with carbs.. IE 1985 Astro van.... I checked with several mechanics as well, and all said the next generation of engines with TBI are not that bad to install... a few more electronic components than you need. I found a 1994 4.3 at a salvage outfit, and a rebuilt TH400 tranny all for $450.... not bad, but I am still waiting and holding out for a carbureted motor, and I have the time. The project is now on hold for the spring/summer so I have the time to look around.... email me at [email protected] if you want to discuss further... thanks | | |
