Hey fellas,
switching from Rochester duals to Carter W1 duals. Spoke with 'The Carburator Shop' from which I was recommended to call for Carter carbs. Well, they want $600 a piece. dang I need 2, so thats $1200 just for carbs. I'm just an average Joe family man that does this for fun. So its way out of my budget...I'm looking for any helpful advice and/or suggestions on getting a pair for a better price.
Maybe I'm way off base here, and 600each is actually a good price...I dont know.

Those prices you got were probably for completely restored carburetors including correct factory finishes etc. I don't think he does just "rebuilds".

Look on that online auction site...W1's come up on there quite often. Or, place a wanted ad here and buy a couple kits and rebuild them yourself. Make sure you get two matching models.
I think the 574s is a good one if you're putting them on a 235.

You might try The Filling Station. They rebuild them to new condition for $259, including replating parts and bushing the throttle shaft. Click

Used cores for rebuilding should be <$25.

I have bought three 49 w-1's off of that online ouction site. they are form a guy in NY state. they have all been perfect right out of the box, and for about $65-$100 each.

He has earlier w-1's as well(without the 49 one year only choke/throttle link)
