Then install a new clutch kit to my new used '57 235, re-attach the tranny and drop the puppy back in. That way I'm quickly running good for a while. The 235 looks to have a few more years left in it. Questions: Will my '49 clutch linkage motor/tranmission mounts work on the '57 235? Sorry for all the questions and thanks for all the help.

I'm no expert, so you can take this for what it maybe worth...
If it were me, unless you've got the front clip off, I would pull the 216 block and bell-housing, leaving the tranny in place. It's alot less to disconnet and pull out of there and you don't have to worry about disconnecting your driveline, as messing around with the driveshaft bell and those u-joints tends to be a pain in the butt. Very little space to work for those of us with fat fingers.
You can still change the clutch and pressure plate. On the back of the 235, you'll need to line-up the new clutch and pressure plate with an alignment tool, bolt it all in place and stab the 235 back onto the tranny.
This really isn't difficult. If it don't line up exactly, you can always turn the motor a bit by hand to make the splines line up.
The linkage etc. should all be the same, since you're not changing tranny's.
As for the motor mounts, I believe the 235 has side mounts. You'll either need to fabricate something to use them, or drill out the bottom of the plate behind the harmonic balancer to use your old front mount.
I believe the only other issue you'll have to contend with is the clearance of your water pump. I think you'll have to either get a short-shaft water pump or purchase a water pump adaptor.
I'm probably overlooking something but I'm sure someone else will chime in and remind me.
Good luck. | | |

If it has the long snout it'll hit your radiator. But with regard to bellhousing, clutch etc, just use ALL of your original pieces, you'll be fine.

As for motor mounts I have not looked yet. I guess the options I have are drilling the motor to match the old mounts or drilling the frame and adding mounts that fit the new motor? I'm not sure about that. I'll get the motor mounted to a stand this weekend and start eyeballing it closer.

Are you still planning on pulling the tranny? Just curious to know whether or not I had swayed your opinion.
The water pump, while it probably looks similar, I'd bet it's longer, and will cause you some issues. As previously stated, nothing that can't be easily resolved, but something you'll sure want to check out so that you have adequate clearance between the fan and the radiator.
If you do a search in this forum on a 235 water pump, I'm sure you'll find all kinds of information on how others have resolved this same issue.
Good luck
By the way, I've tried your link a few times, hoping to see pics of your truck. It doesn't seem to be working???

You'll need to use the '49 bell housing because the mounts changed in '54.
For the front mount you'll just need to drill holes in the mounting flange. I was fortunate enough to have a spare to use to lay out the holes. Lacking that, after you get the old engine out measure the existing holes and lay them out from that. After drilling them round I squared them with a triangle file.

I'd be proud to own either of those gems.
