There is a casting date code on the engine. It's behind the starter on the right side of the block. It should have a month/year code.

Although the page is for 1959, it will help you understand your engine serial number. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/chevyresto/59tsn03.htmThe head casting number you posted should be 3836848. Sometimes those 3's & 8's are hard to read. Your block also has a casting number on the same side as the date code. Can you post it when you get a chance. It will be something like 3738307.
