I've been catalog shopping for rear end gears (Jegs, Summit) and now have questions about the venerable 12-bolt truck rear. Seems there are "3-series" and "4-series" carriers, each with a different range of gear ratios available. The overlap appears to be 3.73:1, with lower ratios for the 3-series and higher for the 4-series.
Questions: How do you tell the difference, if you've got 3.73? Are they interchangeable in the same housing?
It's a '65 C10, and it seems easier to swap the carrier than the whole assembly.

I seem to remember when we changed ratios in those rear ends sometimes we had to use a spacer plate between the crown [ring] gear and the carrier, probably the spacer plate was duplicating the dimensions of the other carrier. I don't know how to tell the difference between the two carriers, but I would imagine they would have some kind of identifying number on them. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 319 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 319 | If you can't fix it with a hammer and screwdriver, you need a bigger hammer.1965 Chevy C10 | | |
