Or have I missed it entirely?
The answer depends on what you mean by major modifications and how much more power you want.
The 292 is probably the most major of the GM sixes with the related 230 and 250 being a little less trouble but not much.
A Chevy 261 is almost a drop in swap. A GMC 270 or 302 will provide more power and is only a little more work.

However you have to define what "no major modifications" is. A 235 with a low pressure turbo would bolt in, and have more power. A 261 will bolt in. A 194/230/250/292 will require a different bell housing, starter, trans cross member and fabrication of mounts.
