I have a 1950 half ton Chev pickup, with the engine block numbers I have a 235 for 1954. Attached is a 4 speed on the floor with a two piece drive shaft with the centre support bearing. Have been trying to identify what the tranny is and the rear end. The wheels are a 5 bolt and not the 6 as I was told that's what came with the trucks in 1950. I am not able to contact the previous owner to verify what is original or what has been upgraded. Does anyone know if this configuration was used on the 3100 series or for the 3600 as well. How does one know if they have a 3600?

The 235 is not original, yours would have come with a 216. The 4 speed tranny was offered as an option for 1/2 tons. The original rear end gears would of been 4.11 and the original drive shaft would have been an enclosed torque tube. Also, 1/2 tons were 6 lug, 3/4 were 8 lug and used a 2 piece drive shaft. The first piece was enclosed and the 2nd was open.

On a Chevrolet wheelbase is unique to each model. A 3100 or 1/2-ton will be 116 inches, a 3600 will be 125-1/4 inches.

5-lug wheels are not stock and that means someone has made modifications. Its anyone's guess what rear axle you have. Some photos might help. If the front is 5-lug drum brakes on a straight axle its probably got Chevy car drums on it.

Pictures of the transmission would help too, though the 235 was never available with any 4-speed except the SM420 so that is likely what it is. A two piece driveline with a center support bearing could be from many different things. Is this stuff installed in the truck now?

yes the truck has the rear end and transmission installed, and the wheel base does measure 116 inches so it is a half ton. I am not sure how to add a picture so if there is a trick to it, please let me know.

There is no trick to posting photos, you just can't do it here, but instead have to post links to a photo hosting site. Then we follow the links to see the photos.
